Speakeasy Reader Series: Spring Forward Edition

  • The Steady 1051 Bloor Street West Toronto, ON, M6H 1M4 Canada

Just as the tulip buds are in bloom, so too is CanLit. Come hear for yourselves as Owain Nicholson, Ana Rodriguez Machado and Shane Neilson share from their lastest work on March 30. Our feature reader will be annouced soon!

Owain Nicholson is a poet and novelist from the Great Canadian Prairies and the western wend of the Rocky Mountains. His writing is fascinated with getting underneath the make of people and our histories, the stories we live and, therefore, live by. Educated at the University of Victoria, Nicholson's first book of poetry was released in autumn 2016 from Nightwood Editions.

Born in Cuba and raised in Canada, Ana Rodriguez Machado lives and writes in Toronto, where she’s pursuing a Creative Writing MFA at the University of Guelph. Her poetry has been shortlisted for The Malahat Review’s Far Horizons Prize in Poetry and the PEN Canada New Voices Award. Last year, she was longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize.

Shane Neilson is a poet, physician, critic, and editor for Frog Hollow Press who's originally from New Brunswick but who is now living in Oakville. He's also a PhD candidate in the English and Cultural Studies Department at McMaster University where he researches the representations of pain as a Vanier Scholar. He won the Robin Blaser Award for a long work in 2015 and was shortlisted for the Trillium Poetry Prize in 2011. Shane's fourth book of poems, Dysphoria, has just been published with the Porcupine's Quill. Dysphoria tracks and critiques the interactions mentally ill persons have with institutions in society.
